My 20% Project (Free Choice Week)

What is 20% Time

Hey guys! I’m back this week with a blog topic of my choice. As you can see from the title I have picked my 20% project. Now some of you are probably wondering, what in the world is a 20% project. Well a 20% project is something you take 20% of your time on to do something related to your passion in some way, and some how helping/making a good impact on something or someones life. It has to be some type of learning, and you have to record you ideas and planning schedule with your group members( If you have any). You get to work in groups all year on your project. It has been a requirement for us so far, and there will be times you have to share you ideas with others, or do speeches/pitches about it. If you have no clue what I am talking about then go to some of these websites or watch this little video.

About MY Project

My 20% project is called Math and Snacks. I know the title sounds a bit odd, but or project i pretty cool. I am working with tow other girls as my partners. We all wanted to go to the animal shelter, because we all love dogs.  The age requirement was like 18 and older only. So we could not do that, so we went on to the idea of tutoring kids younger that us. There was no age requirement there so we were going to our old school, Shirley Mann Elementary. So we are going to go over to Mann about once or twice a month to teach math to 2nd graders. The cool part about this project is that we will teach them with candy and snacks. So if someone gets the question correct then they might get something, the answer will be the amount of (small) treats they earn.
Me and my group want kids to know that they can do anything the try hard to do and that there is always a benefit in learning. In class we if kids get bored they tend to miss important information. We also want to kind of teach the teachers the best ways to teach their concepts, so the students can continue to learn and like it. So some of the things we will need to start of is a teacher that will let us take the time to work with their students. We will obviously need some sort of a math book, some snacks that will work for everyone, even the kids with allergies. We will meet with our mentor and see when these dates can be arranged, until then wish our group luck!
